Developing the skills and knowledge for effective OD practice
Organisational Development (OD) is a planned, holistic approach to improving organisational performance. It is now a significant and influential field of practice that is used increasingly in organisations to deal with issues such as: managing dynamic and complex change, putting people at the heart of their organisation, determining mission, values and strategy, introducing new systems and processes, restructuring and enhancing leadership and employee morale. OD is not exclusively the province of HR: managers from a wide range of functions including finance, marketing, operations and IT are increasingly realising the benefits of OD.
This highly practical programme will equip you with a core understanding of what OD is, with practical OD tools and techniques; it will improve your skills and provide you with greater awareness of self and group process.
Attending the OD Practitioner programme will enable you to:
Build your confidence and impact as an OD practitioner
- Increase your self awareness by identifying strengths and development needs in relation to a set of OD practitioner capabilities
- Broaden your knowledge of the history and roots of OD practice
- Develop a systemic approach to identifying OD needs
- Learn new tools to gather data and intervene effectively in organisational systems
- Improve your knowledge of group dynamics and their impact on your OD practice
- Increase your knowledge of organisational design
- Learn to apply participative approaches to complex change.
We are adding three new topic areas to the programme in response to needs being expressed by our clients; personal resilience( Mod 1) creating innovation(Mod 2) and employee engagement( Mod 3)
NEW for 2011 - Certificate in OD Practice
We will be offering a Certificate in Organisational Development Practice to participants who, as part of the programme wish to complete a number of pieces of work to consolidate and validate their learning and the development of their OD practice. Participants will need to attend two evening Learning Set meetings in the evening of modules 1 and 2 as well as two further Learning Set days after the end of the programme and produce work of approx. 2500-4000 words to qualify for the Certificate.

Programme content
Module 1: OD from the Inside Out
The focus of this module is on the field of OD and on strengthening your impact, capability and influence as OD practitioners. Sessions include: What is OD?, OD Consultancy and the Consultancy cycle, ‘The Self as Instrument, Resilience and Organisational Diagnosis.
Module 2: Understanding the Organisation
This module looks at organisations and how they work through a variety of lenses so that you can intervene as effectively as possible. Sessions include Organisational Mental Models, Culture including a specific exploration of culture and innovation, Group and Organisational Dynamics and Organisational Design.
Module 3: Tools for Transformation
This module focuses on OD and interventions for change, with particular emphasis on change in complex, fast-moving environments. There are sessions on Models of Change, Large Group Interventions, Appreciative Inquiry, Storytelling as a change method and Employee Engagement.
Module 4: The Future of OD
This module is focused on enabling participants to integrate their learning from the previous modules, and to move into purposeful action. Your skills will be tested and honed as you participate in a challenging business simulation through which you will develop the confidence and embodied knowledge necessary to be effective OD practitioners. Module 4 also focuses on the role of OD in creating organisations capable of facing the challenges of a changing environment, enabling you explore and learn new tools at the cutting edge of OD.
Sessions include:
- The Organisation Workshop ;a rare opportunity to experience Barry Oshry’s half day business simulation which offers a simple model for understanding why stuff happens in organisations and what to do about it.
- The evaluation of OD – completing the OD cycle.
- Contemporary thinking and new trends: where is OD going?
- The CEO perspective and OD
- One to one coaching to plan next steps
